In memoriam: Jay M. Howlett

Portrait of Jay Howlett by Photographer Mark Tucker

It is with great sadness that I note the passing of my friend Jay Howlett last month. A talented artist, Jay mastered many crafts, trained as a saddler at the now closed Colonial Williamsburg Taliaferro-Cole Saddler's shop, he then went on to become an artificer, worked for Williamsburg's military programs, and was also adept at the art of the tailor, shoe making, hat making, and single-handedly revived the Leather breeches trade at Colonial Williamsburg.

Jay was a brother, husband, father, friend, artisan, interpreter and musician; generous to a fault,  he was kind with necessary criticism and a mentor to many. He impacted numerous lives and institutions and will be sorely missed.

Rush on boys!
